Man killed by Christmas carols amusement ride

Workplace Health and Safety inspectors have arrived at the Ipswich school where a man was crushed to death while dismantling an amusement ride at a Christmas Carols event.
Emergency services were called to the Collingwood Park State School just after 9pm Tuesday and found the 20-year-old pinned under a section of the ride with head injuries. He died at the scene shortly after.
A report will be prepared for the coroner by police.
Inspectors from QWHS arrived mid-morning to examine the scene, where an area around the partially-dismantled ride had been taped off.
The ride was operated by family business Affordable Amusement Rides Brisbane.
Company representatives declined to comment when contacted by Fairfax Media, deferring to their Gold Coast-based lawyer Raymond Johnson.
“As far as the operators are concerned, they’re in a situation of severe distress and their concern is for the young man’s family,” Mr Johnson said.
A ride being inspected on Wednesday morning appeared to be similar in design to an attraction named The High Flyer advertised on the Affordable Amusement Rides website.
The High Flyer is a carousel-like ride with swings attached to a central rotating hub. It has a diameter of 18 metres and is capable of carrying 24 people.
“[It is] suitable for any age over 5 years it has been very popular for many years and is always bound to be a major attraction at any fete, festival or major event,”  Affordable Amusement Rides’ website says.
The company provides a wide variety of rides to events in Brisbane, Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Toowoomba and Northern New South Wales.
Tuesday night’s incident occurred after the scheduled finish time of the annual Carols by Torchlight event at the school after parents and children had gone home.
Ipswich Deputy Mayor Victor Attwood said the event was cut short by Tuesday night’s wild storm.
By the time he left the school at 8.40pm, nearly all of the 1000-strong crowd had already departed, with those remaining huddling under a tent for shelter.
“When I left it was bucketing down with rain and I do recall some of the people from the rides and food stalls were trying to pack up so they could get out of there,” he said.
“It’s a terrible time for that family leading up to Christmas. Our hearts go out to them and the people at the school too.”
The Christmas event also featured musical performances from bands, market stalls and seven amusement rides.
According to advertising for the event, these included “a giant slide, a mega castle and a train”.
